PINCH new launches for London Design Festival 2018

As part of our activities for this year’s London Design Festival we launched two new pieces; the Angelo sofa, and a new series of our collectable Nim table; Nim Crystalline. Pimlico Road is now a designated design district participating in the festival. Throughout the week both new pieces were displayed at our Bourne Street shop and our new sofa was also presented at Decorex International, Syon Park, Chiswick. Both Angelo and Nim Crystalline represent our creative ambition and criteria in designing furniture and lighting that combine strong signature shape, beautiful materiality and expert making.

    Nim Crystalline

Introducing the third series of the Nim table, Nim Crystalline is limited to 50 numbered editions and represents our intent to create world class, truly unique pieces that revel in artistry and impressive making. An exploration of texture and mass form, the table is cast in Jesmonite and captures the movement, power, potential and beauty of the natural world expressed as a curious man made object. The result is a sculptural table with an impressive solidity, floating on a raised foot and featuring a recessed top.

In the 3rd series of the table; Nim Crystalline, we have developed a new warmer base colour whose intensity is enhanced with multiple colour washes to create depth and luminosity, before the final hand painted effect is applied conveying a sense of organic, lateral undulations. The table’s colour and texture journey across the piece, from its dark murky base through to the lightest of pink hues at the top, just as its rough eroded textured sides flow into a perfectly formed and smooth top. Generously scaled and monolithic in form, Nim Crystalline evokes a dramatic elegance, with a material texture that sits somewhere between natural stone and an otherworldly formation.

Despite this being a piece cast from a mould, Nim is very much a handmade object, requiring the skills of a talented craftsman to hand sculpt the first master before the mould is created. Each of the numbered editions are hand layered and hand painted. Nim Crystalline follows in the steps of the original and highly celebrated and innovative Nim Natural (editions sold through) and Nim Copper.

    Angelo Sofa

A sofa that spent over 12 months in development, Our Angelo is a sofa system offering extreme comfort. Inspired by Creative Director Oona Bannon’s eternal intention to spend more time sitting still, our challenge was to create an extremely comfortable sofa that can adapt to corner sections, whilst retaining the elegance and poise so closely attributed to our Pinch pieces. Angelo is for sitting, extremely comfortably, and for wanting to remain so. Performing as a sofa system, Angelo can be commissioned as variable compositional pieces that best suit our client’s social groupings and use of space. Configuration options are extensive, including ottomans and terminal sections.

Manufactured in the east of England, the sofa has a solid beech frame, sprung seat, a feather and natural material base cushion, and pure feather back cushions that deliver perfectly pitched neck and shoulder support. “In this addition to our sofa range, we wanted to marry many specifics, a sofa that works exquisitely as a linear piece, and that also offers flexibility to incorporate corner sections, but making sure those corner seats are just as comfortable. We wanted to bring our studio aesthetic of relaxed elegance and refined simplicity to this new piece.” says designer Russell Pinch. The Angelo sofa is a perfect PINCH piece, encapsulating enduring classic style, rendered modern with an architectural and elegant rigor.

Messums Wiltshire – Material Wood Exhibition

We were delighted to be asked by Johnathan Messum, of Messums Wiltshire to take part in their exhibition, Material: Wood - Art & Design. The fantastic exhibition is part of an annual program of exhibitions, festivals and hands-on making experiences. Set in a stunning 13th Century wooden barn, the Material Wood exhibition fits perfectly with its surroundings and includes works by Thomas Heatherwick, Sebastian Cox and Christopher Kurtz.

Johnathan explains the concept behind the exhibition; “At a time when our outlook is increasingly shaped by the information of digital media, the value of the handmade is more important than ever. Our programme illustrates that there is an underutilised means of expression in the process of making, one that connects both viewer and creator. This comprehension can be a vital part in encouraging us to look through objects to the person behind the work. Ultimately, it is our contention that art binds people to people, not people to objects.”

The exhibition features our Twig vertical 1350, a design that requires a lengthy and skilful hand making process. The twig range is made from coppicing Hazel, which requires taking branches off living trees, making it an environmentally sustainable way of using wood. Working with wood has always been a pleasure for us; we have celebrated its strength, tactility, warmth and character, which is epitomised in our Twig range.

The exhibition runs until the 9th September, for more information please visit the Messums Wilshire website here.

PINCH Shop: Agnieszka Katz Barlow Exhibition

We are very excited to be presenting the work of Agnieska Katz Barlow alongside our furniture and lighting at our Bourne Street Shop. We have known Agnieska personally for more than 7 years, and have collected some of her work for our own home. Her bond and bravery when working with colour, and the character and freedom of her markings, pair so richly with our own obsession with purity and materiality, the key definers of our studio’s collection, that we invited her to bring the work into No. 46.

Polish-Swedish artist Agnieszka Katz Barlow was born in Krakow, Poland, grew up in Uppsala, Sweden, and lives and works in London. She received an MFA from Slade School of Art, London in 2015. She has exhibited in London, Berlin and Poland - most recently at the 31 C, ASC gallery curated by Paul Carey-Kent, APT gallery selected by Alison Wilding. She was awarded the Barto dos Santos memorial award in 2015. Her work is held in private collections in the UK and the US.

This collection of 8 paintings will be on show for sale in our shop until August 13th, and marks the first of a select number of exhibitions we plan over the next year, where we pair art and photography with our own collection. Our shop is not simply about access to purchase, we desire of it to feed our own creativity, and to inspire those who pass by. Agnieska’s work harmoniously brings to life our own values and instincts in making pieces which afford dimensional, interesting and dynamic spaces. 'The Pinch Apartment': The Future Perfect, San Francisco

As part of their fifth anniversary celebrations, The Future Perfect have annexed a new apartment area to extend their San Francisco retail space to offer more of an unexpected and inspiring shopping experience.  'The Complex’ launched in May 2018, and its first show titled ‘The Pinch Apartment’ showcases our full bedroom collection, including the newly launched Moreau bed and Elan armoire, as well as a selection of other PINCH pieces including our Frans drinks cabinet and Pendel two seat sofa.

Founder of TFP David Alhadeff envisioned creating an environment that feels more like a home than a retail space, with interconnecting rooms offering a unique experience to visitors. The space is a beautifully curated environment, showcasing a selection of artistically led,  sensitively considered furniture and accessories, and is consequently a perfect PINCH home in the Pacific Heights neighbourhood.

    PINCH presents first bedroom collection

We are delighted to present our first bedroom collection, which is centred on two new launches: the Elan armoire and the Moreau bed. Both Elan and Moreau represent our studio’s criteria in designing furniture and lighting that combines strong signature shapes, beautiful materiality and expert making.

With the addition of the Moreau bed to the collection, we now offer a compelling bedroom story, as the bed complements perfectly the existing bedroom pieces in our range, including the Harlosh bedside table, Lana dressing table, as well as the Iona wall and cheval mirrors. Russell Pinch explains; “Designing a bed is a great challenge and resisting the temptation to over-design is an important consideration in our work. We want our furniture to display an enriching but relaxed simplicity and a lightness of touch, while delivering recognisable Pinch handwriting in a piece that has only so much room for re-invention.”

    Moreau bed

Since Pinch started in 2004, we have been asked repeatedly by our clients to add a bed to our collection. The long-awaited Moreau bed delivers our classic Pinch language, where the design has a soft elegance, mixed with a clean and modern poise. Mirroring the lines of its namesake Moreau sofa, one of our best-selling pieces, the upholstered bedhead and frame follows the sculptural camel-back lines, and offers the same sense of generosity and comfort. The Moreau Bed is available in Queen, King and Super King sizes with oak or walnut feet. It can be upholstered in client’s own material to suit an individual’s scheme and is shown here in our preferred fabric; Sahco, Fenello, a beautiful linen mix, in a straw-meets-gold tone, that perfectly chimes with our relaxed, luxurious language.

Elan armoire The second new launch for our bedroom story is the Elan armoire, a wardrobe that offers a modern take on the classic cabinetry technique of Marquetry. Three harmonious birch veneers are combined to create a gentle yet dimensional colour story, layered across the abstract shapes that decorate the doors. While Elan was developed with clothes storage in mind, it can also be made for living area use, as the internal ladder system, which is based on the pre-Industrial revolution technique for creating adjustable shelving - allows the user to select their preferred hanging/shelf and drawer combinations. Additionally, the armoire has custom cast brass, copper plated handles and hinges.

Other bedroom pieces The Pinch bedroom collection includes several designs from our portfolio, including the Lana dressing table, the Iona mirrors, the Harlosh bedside tables and our Anders light. Available in a choice of finishes, the additional bedroom items work harmoniously with the Moreau bed and Elan armoire, to create a tranquil yet dimensional bedroom space.

For more information on the collection, or to find out how to view the pieces, please email enquiries@pinchdesign.com The bedroom collection is now available to view at our shop on Bourne Street.
